I talked about some rules changes a while ago, and here they are.
Because of possible security issues, future copyrighted images will be restricted to:
a) the ones that have already been posted;
b) avatars;
c) signatures;
d) "image threads," where pictures are a natural part of the topic, that now have their own special forum. (Some threads like this already exist. If people want to make others, that's fine, too.)
Forumer's Terms of Use can sometimes be a little hard to understand, but based on everything we know--including the fact that CV and others have already invested a lot of time and work putting pics here--I think this is a good balance. If Forumer does object to the images we have, I can take care of them very quickly, and hopefully everything can proceed normally after that.
One caution: Depending on circumstances, if I have a limited time to edit or save picture posts, the last things I'll get to are the image threads made after the October 2nd re-opening. But hopefully I'd be able to get to everything (in fact, hopefully there'll never even be a problem).
I should mention that linking to the URL of an image is OK in every forum. This way, people can just click and see your image.
To clarify: Direct posting of copyrighted images, or images derived from them, in your posts is no longer permitted unless:
*you have specific permission from the image designer (in which case, please let me know first), or
*the entire image has been created for general message board use (for example, the smileys at www.bestsmileys.com), or
*it is part of a thread devoted specifically to pictures that you post in the Image Threads forum.
Just because an image appears on the Internet doesn't mean that it's not copyrighted. If an image looks copyrighted (for example, commercial illustration or photography), it will be treated as copyrighted unless you provide me with other information beforehand.
To repeat: Linking to the URL of an image is OK in every forum. This will allow people to see your image by clicking on the link. And use of copyrighted images in avatars and signatures is OK until further notice.
Thanks,
